Downderry fresh after the rain

20/10/2018

Next door is delightful Downderry fresh after the rain. Our garden visitors this week from Adelaide and Secret Gardens of the Dandenong Ranges enjoyed seeing the gorgeous Devon inspired cottages nestled in their gardens. Edna designed them to sit ‘lightly on the landscape’ and each has been sensitively extended over time to retain all the arts and crafts charm of her design.

Spring glory!

17/10/2018

The Barn in all her Spring glory. Lush green and so fragrant.

Enjoying the last of the wisteria. The white is a favourite. So fragrant and falls softly like confetti on the paving.

A favourite of Edna Walling, this stunning single flowering white rose has put on a real show this year. Here at the Barn and throughout Bickleigh Vale. Perhaps it is Rosa laevigata?

Laying the new lawn...

13/10/2018

Big, big thanks to Dave Clark for helping me lift and lay the turf on Wednesday, all 300m2 of it.

Dave was a great help and it was a chance to chat on topics like: Italy past and present, the Balkans, tunnels of Europe, Bill Shorten, theories on drinking water, banks, Buckley v Malthouse, political correctness.... It certainly makes the time go faster.

New lawn taking shape. Looking fantastic and softened by the full flowering effect of the garden

Putting Edna’s steps back in carefully. After some expert assistance in the almost dark we are just about done.

Bit of work ahead of us today

Five pallets of sapphire buffalo! Just need the buffolos and muscles to help us!

The Barn's new lawn

8/10/2018

A weekend's hard manual labour employing some big boys toys, rakes, spades, shovels and a whole team of volunteers has stripped up the old lawn and prepared the ground for the new.

We're now just about ready for the new turf thankyou to all our helpers. Think we can pull this off!!

Young evening visitor and new leaf on the Robinia. Think he wanted to share our pulled pork rolls and perhaps a worm or two from the lawn prep works!

It is the most magical time in this garden

It's snowing in Bickleigh Vale...

... and I’ve decided I can’t fight the catkins of our Aspens which float their
downy snow like seeds to coat the lawn.

A gorgeous kooka down in the depths of coonarasprings garden.

And what gorgeous drifts of yellow iris near the veggie garden.

A real treat of a visit this week for the launch of Secret Gardens of  the Dandenong Ranges.

Birch bark, amelanciers and melianthus major

2/10/2018

Beautiful birch bark and snow like dots of amalanchier flowering in the distance.
Hello melianthus major you are always a stunner in this garden. A bit leggy this year in spots but I can’t bear to chop the flowers down just yet...
