November working bee and more work on roadside trees

It was a busy working bee today with potholes filled, gutters cleaned out and culverts unblocked. As usual for this time of year, there was plenty of weeding and pruning - especially at the Pembroke Rd entrance. (Must get that sign straightened though... )

Replanting Trees

Two trees were replanted to replace dead and dangerous trees removed last May.

The first new trees is a Betchtel Crab Apple (Malus ioensis 'plena') outside Wimborne to replace the Swamp Gum that was removed. The Crab Apple was chosen in this rathern busy area to completment the one already planted across the road in the triangle as well as Wimborne's beautiful front garden.

The second new tree is a Blackwood wattle (Acacia melanoxlon) to replace the Stone pine (and before that the Radiata pine) outside Hurst.

The Stone pine was transplanted to this new location in July but didn't thrive.

​It was felt that the wattle, being smaller than the pine when mature, is better suited to this location close the Hurst.

We have a sick Red Oak needing attention

At the Pembroke Road entrance to Bickleigh Vale Rd outside Hurst, the Red Oak (Quercus rubra) is looking very unwell. After it's winter hibernation, there are leaves on the bottom half but the top half is bare. Perhaps it's getting attacked by possums or perhaps the dry winter has affected it - we're not sure and are seeking expert advise as to what's the best thing we can do to help it thrive again.

Two more dead trees identified for removal

The first is a Red Oak (Quercus rubra) in Bickleigh Vale Road outside Mistover.

The second is a Golden Rain Wattle (Acacia prominens in Edna Walling Lane outside Devon Cottage and immediately adjacent to the heritage stone wall.
