Whistlewood ... in pensive mood

The daily chorus...

7/12/2017

Picture
Laughing Kookaburra, possibly contemplating his next song, on the tennis court fence at The Barn.
From the pre-dawn chorus of the Kookaburras to the Tawny Frogmouths calling to each other at night, Bickleigh Vale has a rich soundscape of birdsong.
It is my intention one day to list all the birds I hear in 24 hours. However, I haven’t been that organised yet, nor up early enough, but it will surely also include, depending on the season
  • chortling Magpies
  • Little Ravens
  • Red wattlebirds
  • melodious Blackbirds
  • Pied Currawongs
  • the pip pip of Crimson Rosellas
  • Spotted Doves
  • Cockatoos, both black and white
  • Brown Thornbills as their flock moves from one bush to the next
  • And the birds that call as they fly through – Rainbow Lorikeets, Masked Lapwings (these at night), and Galahs.
And seemingly trying to call some order into the avian orchestra is the Grey Butcherbird calling much of the day from up high with clear pure notes calling right across Bickleigh Vale. The other birds don't seem to be paying much attention to it, but given his predatory habits, I'm sure they would rather know where the Butcherbird is than not.
