Lynton Lee was built as a single room cottage for Edna Walling’s friend, Lorna Fielden (who helped collate and assist with Edna’s writings) on a plot of 1.18 acres in the 1930s. The double storey extension was added later and the original cedar shingle roof was replaced with corrugated iron and dormer windows included in the 1970s.

Lynton Lee is surrounded by large trees (mainly Radiata pines) which create dry, shady areas but there are contrasting, ‘not sunny’ areas which allow for different planting options.

The front garden was cleared in 2022 and replaced with trees and shrubs from Stephen Ryan’s Dicksonia Rare Plans nursery in Mt Macedon. This replant included amelanchiers (which Edna used often), Setaria palmafolias, japonicas and Berberis – all chosen to cope with the dry conditions under the big, thirsty pines. The garden boasts a selection of Malus trees, and large Quercus, a Fastigiata copper beech, many different Cornus trees and viburnums.

Lynton Lee shows each season well with spring bulbs exploding, summer colour, autumn light and the verdant greens that Edna loved.

In keeping with many of the Bickleigh Vale gardens, Lynton Lee has gates in the fences between adjoining properties so people could move freely around the village, adding to the village ambience.

Lynton Lee will always be a challenging and joyous garden in progress.
