Mike's Musings

Early blossom

19/7/2013

It feels like we are in the depth of winter.  Lots of open fires, red wine, cheese & pasta curled up on the sofa.  We turn the sofa around to face the fire during the winter and to face the garden during the summer. Although we are hibernating inside, it is nice to bring the early blossom or bulbs inside.  We have branches of this flowering quince that are gradually opening up, early cheer, snowdrops and daffodils.  The daphne is a huge old bush that is about to burst out with flowers and a scent that will waft inside.  I think we are going to bake some bread and make a ham hock, borlotti bean and pasta minestra with battuto lardo!  Yum!!

Benches

24/5/2013

Our teak benches are started weather and go silver.  They were a present to the garden from the funds we raised through the open garden day.  I love this one under a Japanese maple.  We have planted daphne, irises, daffodils, hellebores & azaleas around it.  With our new dripper system in to keep things growing it should look wonderful. Can't wait for spring! And it looks so different to the thick forest of dead rambling rose branches that was there beforehand. So satisfying to work on an project and then see how it takes shape over time.  So many project areas to go.....
